This week in Riga, the reconstruction works of the intersection of Maskavas and Krustpils streets, which were started last November, have been completed. The intersection ensures that the traffic flow entering and leaving the city is received and directed to different areas of the city, such as the center, Ķengarag and Pārdaugava or Pļavnieki, Purvciem and Teika.
“The intersection of Maskavas and Krustpils streets is an important traffic junction for Riga, which divides flows between residential neighborhoods and industrial areas. The long-awaited redevelopment of the junction will ease congestion when leaving and entering the city. For the safety of pedestrians and public transport passengers, a separate sidewalk and an extension of the bus stop have been built,” emphasizes Vilnis Ķirsis, Deputy Chairman of the Riga City Council for Traffic and City Development.
Until the reconstruction of the intersection, drivers from Maskavas Street to Krustpils Street were not provided with a convenient left turn, which significantly delayed the flow of cars driving straight and created traffic jams in the direction of Salaspils. The main goal of the intersection reconstruction was to improve the geometry of the intersection, ensuring a safe left turn from Maskavas iela to Krustpils iela, maintaining two lanes for straight traffic along Maskavas iela in the direction of Salaspils.
On Maskavas Street, in the direction of Rumbulu and Salaspili, an additional lane was built for turning left onto Krustpils Street, maintaining two passing lanes. On the other hand, in the direction to the center, the number of existing lanes was maintained – two passing lanes and one right-hand exit lane to Krustpils Street. The existing number of lanes was also preserved on Krustpils Street, with an additional lane being built for right and left turns in the direction of Maskavas Street. Also, during the reconstruction of the intersection, lighting and other engineering communications were reconstructed, as well as a closed rainwater drainage system was built. Sidewalks are separated from the roadway by a green zone, and guideline systems and warning lane cobblestones have been built in the sidewalk ramps. Also at the stops, perpendicular to the sidewalk, up to the center of the sidewalk, guidelines are built with paving stone, which ends with the paving stone of the warning lane.
