On Wednesday, December 28, during her first working visit, Minister of Health Līga MenĆelsone visited Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS).
During the meeting, the minister got acquainted with the board and heads of structural units, as well as discussed the hospital’s strategy project 2023-2028. for the year.
“University hospitals are the “backbone” of health care and centers of health care excellence, which must promote the availability, development and quality of services throughout Latvia. RAKUS is one of the most important stages of our healthcare. Today I made sure that in recent years both a modern treatment environment and the quality of services have been developed here, which is similar to the level of large Western European university hospitals. Despite the recent years in the shadow of the pandemic, RAKUS has also been able to develop scientific research activities and further education. However, there are still many challenges ahead,” said Līga MenĂlsone at the meeting.
“Rising energy, construction, patient catering and other administrative costs are putting an unplanned burden on any hospital. Together with government partners, we will have to find solutions to amortize this in order to ensure continuous and high-quality access to health care services.”
During the meeting, the minister got acquainted with RAKUS’s plan to create a comprehensive cancer center, and also visited the operating blocks of the Gaiļezers hospital and the Latvian Oncology Center.
“Certification of the cancer center is another important step towards modern and patient-oriented healthcare – it is a paradigm shift in the treatment of oncological diseases. RAKUS has a strong potential and competence in multi-profile treatment, so the pursuit of a global practice and setting up an appropriate environment will only enhance it.”
During the visit, Līga Menģelsone also visited the Pharmacy service and met with the management and leading specialists of the Latvian Oncology Center.
