Just a day before their scheduled return, the Beach Boys abruptly canceled their late-September comeback shows. Will they play their next show set for October 9?
After a two-month hiatus and numerous setbacks, the Beach Boys (well, Mike Love and some other guys) have abruptly canceled their late-September shows only a day before they were scheduled to kick off on September 24.
The news follows the band’s announcement of a lengthy break over the summer to “recharge,” which saw the cancelation of scheduled appearances that included state fairs. Now, the Beach Boys’ return to their Endless Summer Gold Tour has been pushed back to October.
Initially, the ’60s and ’70s hitmakers vowed to reschedule as many shows as possible, but several ended up canceled altogether. Their newly canceled shows between September 24 and September 27 included stops in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina. Two of those dates had already been rescheduled once before.
The Beach Boys ended up missing six weeks of shows over the summer, but even more were canceled earlier in the year following reports of unspecified health problems (and on-stage struggles) for Mike Love. The group took the summer off to give Love time to recuperate.
Al Jardine, the only surviving original member of the group besides Mike Love, is currently on tour as well with his Pet Sounds Band. They replaced the Beach Boys on August 29 at the Oregon State Fair, and both bands are set to play concerts this fall in North America.
Jardine’s band includes other veteran members of Brian Wilson’s longtime backing group, and they continue to perform much of the Beach Boys’ 1977-era catalog, as well as hits from Pet Sounds.
The Beach Boys are next scheduled to appear on October 9 in Bloomington, Illinois, at Grossinger Motors Arena. This is a rescheduled show originally set for August 13. The band is due to play several other rescheduled shows across North America throughout October and November.
Al Jardine and the Pet Sounds Band also have several October dates in California, followed by a pair of shows in Florida in December.
