The San Jose Sharks have replaced their controversial goal song that lasted only a season after fans found out it was AI-generated using Suno.
Fans of the San Jose Sharks rejoice as the NHL team has announced that a new goal song is arriving on October 1. The news comes after their existing goal song, “Power Bite,” lasted only a season and faced significant fan backlash due to allegations of being AI-generated.
After some internet sleuths confirmed the track was most likely whipped up using the popular but controversial AI song generating platform Suno, that backlash only intensified, and the Sharks decided to drop it altogether.
Most hockey teams have a dedicated song that they play in the arena after a player nets a goal on their home ice. For the Sharks, that was the longtime arena rock staple, Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll, Part 2,” starting in its first season in 1993.
However, those familiar with Gary Glitter’s not-so-glittering criminal history will understand why the team opted in 2016 to switch to 2 Unlimited’s “Get Ready for This.” But that track was replaced by “Power Bite,” which was created by DJ and producer BVRNOUT.
Despite apparently having been selected by fans, the song faced criticism for its “cheap” production value. Fans further criticized the franchise for going with a generic, “soulless” track in order to avoid paying to license an established arena hit.
The accusations of “AI slop” gained momentum, largely substantiated by internet sleuths who discovered that BVRNOUT seemingly used Suno to create the track. The team’s refusal to address that accusation directly only intensified fan frustration.
But now, the Sharks have announced the end of the “Power Bite” era after just one season. In a new video, defenseman Sam Dickonson shuts off a speaker playing the song and announces, “New goal song coming October 1.”
Whether you’re a hockey fan or not, it’ll definitely be interesting to see what the Sharks decide to cook up next—but we’re pretty confident they won’t create their next goal song using AI.
