Destiny 2
This week’s Veil Containment message in Destiny 2 has some big reveals about Maya Sundaresh and Lakshmi-2, which has resulted in a large-scale community reaction:
“There’s a weekly Veil Containment message?”
In another instance of “perhaps this story could be communicated better” I have discovered that a large portion of the Destiny 2 population, including extremely avid players, do not know that there is a weekly Veil Containment audio lore drop every single week, and it features some of the most interesting story points of the season, giving us more genuinely interesting information about the big macguffin of Lightfall, The Veil, which was never explained at the time.
You may have done the first Veil Containment mission, which involved rolling around Neomuna killing Vex waves until you ended up by the Veil, listened to a message and got a gun. But people have not realized (and I didn’t until week 3) that there is an additional message each and every week in the same area by The Veil.
How is everyone missing this? Well because it is very, very easy to miss. There is absolutely nothing telling you to go check out this new lore. There is no flashing icon, and the icon that does exist for it looks identical to the “weekly mission” icon on Neomuna except it is way, way down in the bottom left corner where The Veil is, so if you just bring up the normal map you would never even see it unless you scroll over.
Destiny 2
It’s not a literal new mission every week. You just load into the Veil area and hit a button on a computer and a message plays. It’s Chioma Esi, the wife of Maya Sundaresh, talking about their early experimentation with The Veil. Over the weeks we have learned what happened when it was first discovered, what the Vex have to do with it and Cloudstriders, how it affects exos different and this week, how Lakshmi-2 is involved in all this (confirming a long-held fan theory). There’s Osiris and Nimbus voicework too. I won’t get into detailed spoilers here as yes, you can go back and listen to all the weeks before this (I think this is week eight?) but just standing at the terminal. Or you can go watch on YouTube I guess.
It’s pretty bizarre that so much important story info has been jammed into a little corner almost all players don’t know exist. I’ve seen a bunch of the narrative team interviews which talk about how more important information will be revealed in Veil Containment throughout the entire year, but if that’s the case, they really need to figure out a way to shine a spotlight on it, because I don’t think a million people are going to read this article.
