Topline
X faced a global outage early on Thursday that lasted almost an hour and prevented users from accessing the platform on mobile and desktop, the latest in a series of glitches affecting the website in the past year.
Key Facts
The outage began around 12.30 a.m. ET, when users were unable to view their timeline and were greeted with a “Welcome to X!” message on the website and mobile app.
The platform’s search function allowed users to look up user profiles, but user posts were not searchable.
The ability to make posts was also broken—with a “post not sent” message appearing—but some users were able to host Spaces to discuss the outage.
The platform appeared to return to normal about an hour later.
Twitter’s API status page, which monitors the service for outages, made no mention of the outage and is currently displaying an “All Systems Operational” message.
Tangent
The website outage tracker Downdetector received more than 92,000 reports of Twitter’s services being down, suggesting the scale of the outage.
What We Don’t Know
The cause of the outage remains unknown and it is unclear if it is linked to other outages and technical glitches faced by the website earlier this year. X CEO Linda Yaccarino and the platform’s owner Elon Musk did not comment.
