Erik ten Hag has provided an update on whether Manchester United will appeal the red card shown to Casemiro in Saturday’s 2-1 win at home to Crystal Palace.
The Red Devils seemed to be cruising to victory at Old Trafford following goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford either side of half-time, but Jeffrey Schlupp scored after the hosts were reduced to ten men to set up a nervy finish.
A melee between most of the outfield players on both sides ensued with just over 20 minutes remaining when Schlupp shoved Antony down the touchline and towards the advertising hoardings. Casemiro was dismissed after a VAR review as he was pictured grabbing Will Hughes by the neck amid the chaos, even though they were then seen making light of the situation shortly afterwards.
After the final whistle, Ten Hag revealed his fury at ‘inconsistent’ refereeing, pointing to other incidents which have gone against United in recent weeks, including Andy Carroll’s horror tackle on Christian Eriksen last week which has ruled the Dane out for several months.
The Dutchman was then asked if United would consider appealing Casemiro’s red card with the Brazilian now set to miss three matches through suspension.
“First of all, we have to deal with it and we will do, but it is not right,” Ten Hag replied.
“It shouldn’t have happened. And last week, VAR doesn’t do anything about the tackle [by Carroll on Eriksen], but this was avoidable and because in this incident there have to be consequences and they are inconsistent and that is not right, that is not fair against us.
“We have to think about [appealing]. But be fair, we have seen when you’re freezing [the frame], Casemiro is crossing the line. But many more players were crossing the line there.
“We get also some warnings about our team reacting like this and I think you have to do it, you have to protect each other but we want to keep our standards and values at Man United, keep them high.
“We can’t cross lines but we have to stick together and, yes, we have to stand for each other, yes.”
