Customs officials of the Latvian State Revenue Service discover 138,000 smuggled cigarettes in a cargo of mineral fertilizers on a train

Officials of the Customs Administration of the State Revenue Service (SRS), while inspecting freight trains, discovered 138,800 cigarettes (6,940 packs of cigarettes) hidden in a cargo of mineral fertilizers.

On February 15, 2022, based on the results of the scan image analysis of the train composition, the officials of the Rēzekne II customs control point checked the hopper-type wagon with which a cargo of mineral fertilizers was brought to Latvia from Russia.

During the in-depth control, the customs officers found that 15 boxes wrapped in black polyethylene film, containing “NZ Gold” and “Premier” brand cigarettes, were buried in the mineral fertilizers.

As a result of the control, 138,800 cigarettes or 6,940 packs of cigarettes with excise tax stamps of the Republic of Belarus were seized. The amount of taxes unpaid to the state for the seized cigarettes is more than 24,000 euros.

When signs of a criminal offense were detected during customs control, the case materials were handed over to the Tax and Customs Police Department of the SRS for decision-making on the initiation of criminal proceedings.

By carrying out customs control measures, in January 2022, the SRS Customs Administration prevented a total of 6.09 million smuggled cigarettes from being imported into Latvia.
