Travis Scott and Live Nation have reportedly settled a third lawsuit filed on behalf of an individual who perished during the Astroworld tragedy in 2021.
This third settlement entered the media spotlight in a piece from Rolling Stone, after reports in October of 2022 revealed that the Houston-born act had settled two different complaints. At Scott’s November of 2021 Astroworld festival, a crowd crush claimed the lives of 10 attendees and injured hundreds of others.
And while the Utopia creator has since been cleared of related criminal charges – separately, Houston Police last month released an almost 1,300-page-long report about the deadly episode and the corresponding investigation – civil litigation is ongoing.
Moreover, Scott is also facing continued criticism from the families of those who lost their lives at Astroworld 2021, and a far-reaching gag order, impacting media coverage on the many lawsuits centering on the tragedy, remains in place.
Back to the newly detailed settlement, the mentioned outlet, citing court documents, indicated that the family of 14-year-old John Hilgert had come to an agreement with defendants including Live Nation and Scott in February.
The terms of the settlement haven’t been publicly identified, and at the time of this writing, neither Travis Scott nor the plaintiffs seemed to have addressed the matter with a formal statement. (Needless to say, given the timing of the months-old settlement’s entry into the media spotlight, it’s possible that additional settlements may have been finalized without yet making headlines.)
Notwithstanding the end of this lawsuit and the lack of criminal charges against the Michael Jordan collaborator Scott, though, a multitude of separate suits are still making their way through the court system.
To be sure, it was only in late July that the attorneys for multiple attendees (who’d sued in December of 2021) announced the certification of their settlement class action. In brief, this particular complaint concerns sought refunds for the “Magic Money” digital credits that attendees were allegedly compelled to purchase to “pay for the popular onsite carnival rides and games” at Astroworld.
“We are gratified after several years of litigation to have reached an agreement with the Defendants to compensate the concert goers who suffered such a traumatic experience for at least some of their financial losses,” Potts Law Firm said in a statement.
“We are pleased that the Court has certified the settlement class action today so that we may now move to the next stage of settlement approval and hopefully obtain compensation for all of the impacted concert goers in the coming months,” concluded the firm, further disclosing that a final settlement approval hearing is scheduled for December 1st.
Despite a steady stream of Astroworld news and other less-than-ideal headlines, Scott’s making a commercial splash with Utopia, which has according to Chart Data racked up over 500 million Spotify streams since becoming available to fans only one week ago.
