Tottenham vs Burnley: Preview, predictions and lineups

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to bring a disastrous few weeks to an end this Saturday when they host Burnley in the Premier League.

Spurs have lost their last four matches and seen their dreams of Champions League qualification all but disappear. They now haven’t kept a clean sheet since early March and lost their most recent outing 4-2 at the hands of Liverpool last Sunday, with a defeat this weekend officially ending their pursuit of the top four.

Fortunately for Ange Postecoglou, Burnley have their own issues to contend with. In fact, despite some positive recent results, the Clarets will be relegated this weekend if they fail to win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and even a victory won’t be enough if Nottingham Forest are victorious against Chelsea later in the day.

Recent history suggests that Burnley may be demoted come Saturday evening having lost both battles with Spurs this term. The first was an emphatic 5-2 defeat at Turf Moor in the league, with second a narrow 1-0 loss in north London in the FA Cup.

Here’s 90min’s preview of the game.

Tottenham‘s injury concerns haven’t helped their recent collapse, with six players out for the rest of the campaign. Three of those are left-backs in Destiny Udogie, Ben Davies and Ryan Sessegnon, which forced the unconvincing Emerson Royal to step in there against Chelsea and Liverpool.

Loanee Timo Werner may have played his final game for Spurs following a hamstring injury, while Manor Solomon and Fraser Forster remain sidelined.

Tottenham predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Emerson; Hojbjerg, Bissouma; Johnson, Maddison, Son; Richarlison.

Burnley also have a host of players who won’t return to action until next season, including defenders Jordan Beyer and Ameen Al-Dakhil. Nathan Redmond and Aaron Ramsey are also sidelined for the final matches of the campaign.

However, Luca Koleosho could return on the wing after being injured since December, while Maxime Esteve is a doubt with a knock sustained against Newcastle United last time out.

Burnley predicted lineup (4-4-2): Muric; Assignon, O’Shea, Ekdal, Vitinho; Odobert, Berge, Cullen, Larsen; Foster, Fofana.

Tottenham couldn’t have been handed a much more generous fixture in which to get back on track, even if Burnley are scrapping for their lives in the relegation zone. The Clarets have conceded 74 goals in 36 matches this term, including five to Spurs earlier this season, and the Lilywhites have shown their attacking quality in recent weeks despite poor results.

However, Burnley will be offered hope by Spurs’ poor defensive record. They have conceded 13 times in their last four matches, while also letting in goals against Luton Town, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest on home soil this term. Even if the Clarets can unnerve a shaky defence, they’re unlikely to secure the victory they need.

Prediction: Tottenham 2-1 Burnley
