ForbesToday’s NYT Mini Crossword Clues And Answers For Saturday, August 2ndBy Erik Kain
Sunday is a good day for crosswords, though the Mini doesn’t play by the same rules as the New York Times main crossword, which gets bigger and more challenging on Sundays.
The NYT Mini is a smaller, quicker, more digestible, bite-sized version of the larger and more challenging NYT Crossword, and unlike its larger sibling, it’s free-to-play without a subscription to The New York Times. You can play it on the web or the app, though you’ll need the app to tackle the archive.
A few hints for the tougher ones in case you don’t just want the answers right away:
- It’s not “From here to there”
- The Hobbit in question is the elder.
- The creature is not a fish or anything like a fish.
- Think “seed” in terms of sports, higher numbers being the worse teams.
While some of today’s words are pretty simple, some might have you stumped. You’ll find the answers below. Spoilers ahead, obviously. Skip ahead for the image of today’s solved puzzle.
ACROSS
1. The first blank in this phrase: From __ to __ — HEAD
5. “The Hobbit” hobbit — BILBO
6. A 16 seed beating a 1 seed, e.g. — UPSET
7. Feeling of ill will — SPITE
8. The second blank in this phrase: From __ to __ — TOE
DOWN
1. Creature able to hold its breath underwater for up to 30 minutes — HIPPO
2. Name that sounds like the twelfth and third letters of the alphabet — ELSIE
3. Help with a crime — ABET (as in aiding and abetting)
4. Pour love (on) — DOTE
5. Opposite of boom, on Wall Street — BUST
I got hung up thinking the first across word was ‘HERE’ because it fit “From here to there” and it gave me both HIPPO and ELSIE. Naturally, finding TOE helped solve that problem, and problems are solved like falling dominoes in this game. Still, I was stuck on ABET and DOTE thanks to using HERE instead of HEAD and I should have moved on more quickly, but sometimes one is stubborn and pigheaded.
