Three ‘Destiny 2’ Expansions Are Temporarily Free, Get Them Fast

Destiny 2

Bungie

Well, Destiny 2 players have been complaining that old expansions should be free at this point, given how many years it’s been since they’ve been released. Now, at least temporarily, at least on one platform, they are.

This is yet another Epic Games Store giveaway, and the promotion is that the Destiny 2 Legacy Collection, which contains the Shadowkeep, Beyond Light and Witch Queen expansions, is now free from today, December 12 through Wednesday December 20. If you download it between that time, you will be able to keep all of it. You need to have the base Destiny 2 game downloaded to claim it, but that’s been free for a while now.

Destiny 2 does have crossplay and cross save, but if you pick up these expansions on EGS, that content will only be accessible on EGS, as it won’t cross over to console or Steam as separate storefront. Not ideal but hey, free, and normally this would be $60 for the trio.

I would indeed recommend everyone getting this, as the hardest part of Destiny 2 is figuring out where to start and what to tell people to buy. The Legacy Collection has been a good place, but for $60? Tough sell. For free? Go for it. You can play the campaigns in order, but be advised Shadowkeep is the worst, Beyond Light is pretty good and Witch Queen is one of the series’ best ever. This does not include Forsaken, arguably the greatest Destiny expansion ever, which has had its story campaign deleted from the game (long story), and it does not include this year’s much-maligned Lightfall, which is still being sold separately with this year’s seasons.

There’s a lot of stuff in here besides the base campaigns. The three of those will get you 37 exotic weapons, 15 pieces of exotic armor and the entire Stasis subclass. Much of that will allow you to slide fully into the current “meta” with that much accessible to you, and even if you don’t want to play Lightfall (probably don’t, though it maybe worth it for the Strand subclass alone) you can also jump into the current season by itself.

Some Destiny 2 fans are saying that this is “desperation” for the struggling Bungie to agree to offering all this for free for a week. Keep in mind that Epic pays big money for promotions like this, millions upon millions, so it’s sort of a win-win as Bungie gets that money plus an influx of new players who may stick around longer term of they like what they play. We’ll see how that goes. But yeah, you might as well pick it up, right?
