The Rolling Stones announce “Hackney Diamonds,” their first studio album of new material in 18 years, with details to be unveiled in a live-streamed interview with Jimmy Fallon on September 6.
The Rolling Stones will release their first album of original material in 18 years, “Hackney Diamonds,” with more details forthcoming at an event in East London’s Hackney district on Wednesday, September 6.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood will be interviewed live by “The Tonight Show” host and comedian Jimmy Fallon. The event will be hosted and livestreamed exclusively on YouTube at 6:30 AM PST/ 9:30 AM EST.
“Hackney may be at the heart of Hackney Diamonds, but this is a truly global moment we want to share with fans around the world via YouTube,” the Stones stated.
The announcement of “Hackney Diamonds” follows a cryptic ad campaign in which the band took out a false advertisement in a local Hackney newspaper, and the band’s iconic mouth and tongue logo was projected onto the side of landmarks in cities worldwide, including London, New York, and Paris.
The band’s first album of original material since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang,” the new album will also be the group’s first release since the death of drummer Charlie Watts in 2021. A founding member of the group, Watts is known for having played in all the band’s thousands of concerts except one and almost every recorded song since the group’s inception in 1962. Last year, The Rolling Stones toured with drummer Steve Jordan.
The Stones have been recording new music for years, with at least one upcoming song said to feature former Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The group took a break from working on new material to record an album of blues standards in 2016.
Even as the group’s members turn 80, they retain an unmatched acumen for performance, with Mick Jagger having retained nearly his entire measure of vocal range and, most impressively, his energy. Jagger turned 80 on July 26.
