An exhibition of the collection of the Riga Porcelain Museum dedicated to the works of Mirdza Jurčas (1921-2001) is on view at the Riga Porcelain Museum until April 9.
Every year, the Riga Porcelain Museum of the Association of Cultural Institutions of the Riga Municipality pays in-depth attention to a significant personality or phenomenon in the art and industry of porcelain. By creating exhibitions of the collection, it is possible to show to the public parts of the museum’s collection that are not otherwise exhibited, as well as offer those interested to get to know an artist or art phenomenon in a much more thorough way.
In 2023, the collection exhibition of the Riga Porcelain Museum is dedicated to the artist Mirdza Jurča (née Januža). Born in 1921; her creative life is connected with A/S “M. S. Kuznetsovs” Porcelain, earthenware and earthenware factories in the 20th century. in the 1930s and work at the Riga Ceramic Factory during the war in the 20th century. In the 40s, and with the position of an artist in Riga Porcelain and Faience in the post-war years, already during the Soviet occupation. Until the 20th century Mirdza Jurča has created countless paintings and decor design samples for mass production in faience and porcelain since the 1970s. She was equally adept at creating decorations in the “national style” characteristic of an authoritarian and totalitarian system, as well as later – laconic solutions characteristic of the modernist era. In addition to the graphic design of plates, mugs, pitchers, tableware and other objects, Mirdza Jurča has also created several forms of dishes, especially artistically expressive – in earthenware.
The aim of the collection exhibition is to highlight the particular author from the general flow and accentuate her unique handwriting. In the exhibition at the Riga Porcelain Museum, around sixty objects and groups of objects, whose shape or decoration is the author of Mirdza Jurča, will be exhibited. Many of them will be shown publicly for the first time. Several will be an unexpected and pleasant surprise for those interested and lovers of porcelain art. In addition to Mirdza Jurča, the names of other authors will also be heard in the exhibition, for example: Jēkabs Bīne, Anatolij Travnikov, Anastasija Zumente, Levon Agadzhanyan, Taisija Poluikēviča, Aina Mellupe, Ilga Vanaga, Erik Eller and Valdis de Boor, as the artist has given the industrial forms of these authors your vision for the design solution.
