The Diplomat has been one of Netflix’s lower key sleeper hits in recent years, starring Keri Russell fresh off of The Americans. We knew the show was coming in 2024, but now, we know specifics.
The release date of The Diplomat season 2 is October 31, 2024, yes, on Halloween. No links to that holiday, clearly, in terms of theme and tone.
That late October release date means that this is one year and seven months after season 1 aired, which is not unusual for Netflix series, even ones that in theory, should not cost all that much. But there’s one really good bit of news here. For once, Netflix is not splitting a season of a popular show in half. Usually Netflix lets season 1 air as a full binge release, but any popular show now is getting its 2nd, 3rd, 4th seasons split into two parts a month apart. Sometimes three. That is not happening here as that October 31 date is the only one listed, meaning all episodes are going to air then rather than any sort of break. Fantastic news, and I’m not sure why The Diplomat escaped that annoying divide when so many other shows have not.
We have a full synopsis of season 2 as well as a new teaser.
“A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters US Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world (Keri Russell). Struggling to rebuild the lives that broke and the team that split apart, Kate’s worst fears unfold: The attack that brought her to the UK didn’t come from a rival nation, it came from inside the British government. As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost-ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive, and very much involved. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and a threatening visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).”
So yes, Hal being alive is not a huge shock, even though the events of the finale may have implied otherwise. No real point pretending that he was killed off at this point, which made that finale not land as impactfully as it could have. But whatever.
Surprisingly, this series is not based on any thriller books, even if it seems like something that might be. Rather, it was created by Debora Cahn and no one knows its future twists and turns with no source material to read ahead with. I like that aspect of it.
So yes, October 31, Halloween. I’ll be there.
