If there is one question that Cyberpunk 2077 players are asking themselves today, it’s whether or not to jump into today’s grand 2.0 update early (which should launch sometime this afternoon) that overhauls almost every aspect of the gaming including:
- A totally revamped skill tree
- A totally new cyberware system
- Loads of new cyberware
- A new police system and car combat
But do so ahead of the release of Phantom Liberty, which will be out the afternoon/evening of September 25 in the Americas, September 26 everywhere else. Should you be playing five days early or is there a reason to wait until you can also start Phantom Liberty?
I say do it today, if you’re that excited to play. No matter what type of player you are, I would say there’s little point waiting for Phantom Liberty. Why? I’ll explain.
New Players – While it’s possible to skip straight to Phantom Liberty from a brand new character, I would not recommend that without the context of the rest of the game. Instead, you will be introduced naturally to the Phantom Liberty storyline a good while into the game, around when you start to meet the Voodoo Boys in Pacifica.
While it’s possible you simply race through the game and get past that point before Phantom Liberty launch that…also doesn’t matter. I played Phantom Liberty three times after beating the entire game…three times (more actually, to see all the endings) and it was perfectly great doing it that way. But I’d be amazed if you got that far in just a few days here. I may even recommend waiting to start it until the very end, as that made it land especially well.
Returning Players – Yes, there will be less to do here depending on how much of the existing map you’ve cleared. But there’s nothing wrong with hopping in to rebuild your old build under the new system. You will have the ability to refund every Attribute Point you’ve spent once, and all your Skill Points will be returned to you and can be reshuffled around for free whenever.
You can then test out what you may like or not like about a revamped build before Phantom Liberty launches on whatever Gigs you haven’t cleared or crimes you haven’t stopped. Or on random gang guys hanging out on corners. Again, if you’ve 100% cleared there will not be much to do until Phantom Liberty, but you can play around with the new systems, which in addition to builds also includes the new Police system (get up to 5 stars and fight MaxTac) and car combat (which pairs well with…the new police system).
I see no reason to wait for Phantom Liberty to hop back into Cyberpunk 2077 after update 2.0. Especially for new players, as it likely will not change the experience at all. Returning players with high level Vs will have less to do, but it’s still fun to play around. I will have a separate post in a bit with the things I would do first when Update 2.0 launches later today.
