Masters Football was nothing short of an elite noughties pastime. 12 legends at a time duelling on the hallowed blue indoor turf for a shot at post-playing career glory.
It was hell of a lot of fun, but the competition ceased to exist beyond 2011 following 11 years of entertainment.
Brits have been clamouring for its return pretty much ever since, and their appeals have finally been heard. We might have to wait a little while longer for a return of the regional heats and the subsequent national competition, but the 2023 Scottish Masters Cup is a promising start for potential future indoor six-a-side ventures.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming competition.
The entire tournament will be played on Saturday 9 September at Glasgow’s Braehead Arena, with the first game scheduled for a 19:00 kick-off.
Four teams are competing in the Scottish Masters Cup. Everybody plays each other once with the top two facing off in the final.
The six-a-side games will be played over 16 minutes (two eight-minute halves) and it’s likely we’ll see a return of all the old Masters Football rules (of which there aren’t many). All players are 35+ and there are unlimited substitutions.
The upcoming event will be streamed live on 90min’s YouTube channel and can also be watched on TV via BBC Scotland.
The four Scottish teams competing in the upcoming Masters event are Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, and Hibernian.
Three of the teams have been completed, with Rangers’ final two players yet to be confirmed. Gers look like a strong outfit, though, with Alan Hutton, Pedro Mendes, Barry Ferguson, Kenny Miller, and Kris Boyd suiting up.
Elsewhere, veteran Pasquale Bruno will be manning the Hearts defence, while Grant Holt, who’s best known for his work with Norwich, is playing for Hibs after spending the 2016/17 season with the Scottish club.
Former Crystal Palace and Welsh international Joe Ledley is teaming up with the likes of Kris Commons and Gary Hooper for the Celtic vets.
