Ruben Amorim drops Amad Diallo contract update after major Erik ten Hag claim

Head coach Ruben Amorim says Manchester United want young star Amad Diallo to stay at the club as talks over a new contract continue.

The Ivory Coast international’s current deal expires in the summer – United do hold a one-year extension option – and there have been fears he could look to leave having fallen out of favour under previous manager Erik ten Hag.

However, the switch to Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation has open up a wing-back spot for Amad, who has repaid the new boss’ faith with three assists in the Portuguese’s first three games, including two in the 4-0 thrashing of Everton.

While Amad was reportedly not trusted by Ten Hag, finding game time hard to come by, Amorim has given a positive update on his future at Old Trafford.

Speaking ahead of United‘s clash with Arsenal on Wednesday, he said: “I think he wants to stay and we want him to stay. So that is clear and we will find a solution.

“Sometimes, in that position, the way he receives the ball, if you are right-footed, you don’t always have the space to cut back. We have, for example, [Noussair] Mazraoui and Diallo who can cut back into the axis because they are fast and good with the ball.

“He [Amad] has that ability and, in that position, you have to have a good physique. By good physique, I don’t mean size obviously. He is able to run and that is a key point in that position. So it’s perfect for him.”

Amorim’s update comes after Fabrizio Romano revealed United’s talks with Amad over an extension had previously stalled because of Ten Hag’s lack of faith in the young winger, but his improved standing under the new manager has re-opened the door to a new deal.

Amad has taken to the new role superbly, looking electric in the win over Everton, and the 22-year-old has admitted he is happy to play wherever he is asked.

He said: “Defender, striker, I can play wherever the manager needs. I’m happy to fight for the team.

“I have no problem to play just as the right winger, I can play everywhere. Like I said to the manager, if you need me as a keeper, I’m ready to do my best.”
