Real Madrid is “confident” of landing Germany and Bayer Leverkusen wonderboy Florian Wirtz according to anonymous club sources which spoke to SPORT.

Though his involvement in the competition was ended on Friday, Wirtz became a breakout international star at the ongoing Euros alongside his fellow young gun Jamal Musiala.

Netting his country’s opening goal during its debut against Scotland, in an eventual 5-1 thrashing, he also forced extra time at Spain’s expense through a stunning bouncing shot inside the box in the 89th minute that tied a quarterfinal score 1-1.

Unfortunately for Wirtz and Co., Mikel Merino’s 119th minute header broke the hosts’ hearts and sealed a 2-1 win for La Roja which booked a last four meeting with France.

Yet long before lighting up the continent this summer, recent Bundesliga winner Wirtz had already sparked the interest of many potential suitors including two of the world’s biggest clubs in La Liga rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Catalan newspapers such as Mundo Deportivo like to remind us that Wirtz said it is his “dream” to play for Barca.

Yet with the Blaugrana still recovering from a financial crisis that pushed it to the brink of bankruptcy at the turn of the decade, it is currently unable to compete for the signing of a player which Bayer CEO Fernando Carro warned “will not leave for less than €150 million ($162.6 million)”.

MARCA reported a month ago that Madrid has an agreement in place with Wirtz to become its marquee signing in 2025, and following on from that, SPORT explains how Los Blancos are “confident of taking” the 21-year-old.

The outlet explains that Madrid has “a very good relationship with Bayer Leverkusen”, and believes it will convince the player “to join the whites” and become President Florentino Perez’s Galactico next year after Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe took that billing in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

Though pursuits of these players for a cut fee are still possible in the summer transfer window ahead of next season, 2025 could also see Perez lure Lille central defender Leny Yoro and Bayern Munich left back Alphonso Davies to the Spanish capital on shrewd free transfers.
