Pep Guardiola provides Bernardo Silva injury timeline after Red Star scare

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expects Bernardo Silva back in action next week after the Portugal international limped off against Red Star on Tuesday.

Silva left the game shortly before half-time after picking up a knock, adding his name to City’s ever-growing list of injuries.

“We are in trouble but I am not going to say, ‘Oh, we have a lot of injuries’,” Guardiola said after the 3-1 victory. “When we have five important players – really, really important players – injured, to sustain that for a long time will be difficult. But it is what it is.”

Fortunately, it appears as though Silva could be back in action soon as Guardiola offered a positive update during Friday’s press conference.

“It’s a little injury, a week-ten days he will be out,” Guardiola revealed.

City take on Nottingham Forest on Saturday and will also likely be without Silva for the trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend, although the 29-year-old could return against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on 4 October.

A huge clash with Arsenal is on the agenda four days later and Guardiola will be keen to have Silva, and the rest of his injured stars, back available.

“We play a lot of games. Less games, less injuries,” Guardiola hypothesised when asked why City are struggling with injuries. “A lot of games in a row over the years with no rest, we can not sustain it.

“Jack [Grealish] got a knock on his knee in Sheffield – that’s football, it can happen. But muscular injuries mean you miss a lot of games.

“Jack is coming back, he has trained and maybe he can play some minutes. Kova [Mateo Kovacic] is nearly back. But now we’ve lost Bernardo for a few days and John [Stones] and Kevin [De Bruyne] are still out.”
