Pep Guardiola on key positive from Man City’s 4-4 draw with Chelsea

Pep Guardiola has insisted that Manchester City’s 4-4 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is proof that his side have not gone “soft” after treble win.

City and Chelsea played out an all-time great Premier League game on Sunday, with Guardiola’s side taking the lead in west London on three occasions, only to be pegged back by a 94th minute penalty from former player Cole Palmer.

The result, coupled with Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Brentford earlier in the day, sees City’s lead atop of the league table be cut to just one point heading into the international break.

Speaking to the press after the draw, Guardiola revealed that he was happy with the result, stating his belief that the performance from his side proved that they had not lost any hunger to win after lifting the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League last season:

“We are top of the league and qualified in the Champions League. From where we have come from [last season], when you can have the tendency to be more soft, it is the complete opposite. It hasn’t happened.

“If you expect come here and win 7-0, you are wrong. I could not expect a different game. We were close and maybe we didn’t manage perfectly in some moments, but it’s football and you should always give credit to your opponent – and our opponent was really good.

“Every season when I came to Stamford Bridge, it was tough and when I came with Barca and Bayern, it was always really, really tough.”

Guardiola’s side will be back in Premier League action November 25 when they face off against their main title rivals Liverpool in a crucial game at the Etihad Stadium.
