After the first day of the European Championship in Rugby-7, the Latvian national team qualifies for the quarterfinals

This weekend, the European U18 Trophy division championship in rugby-7 will take place in Riga, at the Daugava Stadium.

Subgroup matches took place today, where the order of tomorrow’s matches and the teams that will compete in the quarterfinals were determined.

The Latvian national team won two victories in three subgroup games, ranked second in its subgroup and, therefore, will continue fighting in the quarter-final games on Sunday.

Today, in the first game of the day, our rugby players met the Monaco national team, where they won 7-5 in a fierce battle.

In the second game of the day, we competed against Hungarian athletes. In an exciting duel, our athletes recognized the Hungarian advantage with a minimal result difference – a loss with 21:22.

In order to enter the quarterfinals, Latvian young rugby players needed only a victory in the third game of the day against the Swedish national team. The guests from Sweden were the first to score, but soon the course of the game evened out. A fighting draw at the break – 12:12. In the second half of the game, Latvian rugby players were more successful and won 19:12.

Therefore, on Sunday, July 24, we will see the Latvian team again at the Daugava stadium at 11:44 a.m., when we will meet the strongest team of subgroup C in the quarterfinals.

Scorers in the Latvian team: Bruno Osītis 15 points, Renārs Liepa – 15 points, Dāvids Židelis (captain) – 12 points, Jānis Cepurītis – 5 points.

This year, 11 teams are participating in the European U18 Championship in Rugby-7 in Riga without the host Latvia – we will see the national teams of Luxembourg, Croatia, Andorra, Turkey, Sweden, Hungary, Austria, Moldova, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Monaco.

Two finalists of the Trophy tournament will win the right to start in the Rugby Europe Championship division in 2023, where the strongest European rugby teams play.
