Key Facts

In a tweet just before 11 a.m. EST, Greene said she was “swatted” for “like the 8th time.”

Greene praised her local police, calling them the “GREATEST” and adding they “shouldn’t have to deal with this.”

Greene did not elaborate on the alleged incident, but swatting typically involves a prank caller who falsely reports a violent crime to police with the goal of getting heavily-armed SWAT teams to respond to someone’s home.

Police in Rome, Georgia, confirmed to NBC News that a person in Rome, New York, called the suicide hotline and said he shot his girlfriend at Greene’s address in Georgia and was threatening to commit suicide.

Police were not sent to Greene’s home, the department told NBC News, after her security detail told officers they didn’t need to respond.

Forbes reached out to Greene’s office and the Rome, Georgia, police for more information.

Crucial Quote

“I appreciate (the local police) so much and my family and I are in joyous spirits celebrating the birth of our savior Jesus Christ!” Greene posted on X.

Key Background

Greene has been swatted in the past, including at least twice in August 2022, and posted on X in October 2022 that she had been swatted for “the 6th time.” In that post, Greene called swatting “a very serious crime (in which) the caller wants to have their victim murdered by police,” and said it is “a giant abuse of police resources and time.” Swatting is rare, but it has occasionally resulted in death if police mount a large-scale response to a fake criminal call. Greene, a supporter of former President Donald Trump and former member of the far-right Freedom Caucus, has been controversial throughout her nearly three years in Congress, including for previously supporting the QAnon conspiracy theory and backing false claims about mass shootings. She has made comments against her own party, including calling Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) “not fit for office” after the senator appeared to freeze while answering a question earlier this year and saying Republicans who didn’t support a measure of hers in November were hiding “behind excuses.”
