Manchester United have been described as “open to top offers” for Marcus Rashford ahead of the upcoming January transfer window and beyond.
Rashford has struggled for consistent form over the last 18 months, having previously scored 30 goals during the 2022/23 campaign and surpassing 20 in successive years between 2019 and 2021.
The 27-year-old netted eight times across all competitions in 2023/24, although a slightly improved 2024/25 has seen him get seven already, just prior to the halfway stage.
But it may now be that the club views a sale more valuable than keeping Rashford.
Sky Sport Germany first reported on Tuesday that Rashford is not considered “unsellable” by Old Trafford chiefs, despite acknowledging recent improvement since Ruben Amorim started work as head coach, and that the club was prepared to consider offers last summer.
With Rashford among the squad’s highest earners, the upside of selling would be removing a big contract from the wage bill amid potential concerns about meeting financial regulations and have more flexibility to attack recruitment needs. His status as a home-grown player is more valuable when it comes to Premier League Profit & Sustainability Rules due to any sale being a pure profit.
A similar but separate report from the Telegraph claims that Rashford is “fighting to save” his United career. There are apparent concerns within the club about his lifestyle, whether he is sufficiently focused on football, and off-field distractions affecting his performance.
Saudi Pro League clubs and Paris Saint-Germain are named possible destinations. Barcelona have been linked with Rashford in the past but there is no mention, yet, this time around.
Rashford signed a long-term five-year contract in the summer of 2023, giving him three and a half more years still to run. High wages for a buying club to meet and a sustained drop in form could make it a challenge to offload him if suitors do not find it an attractive proposition.
