Manchester City squad: Confirmed shirt numbers for 2023/24

Manchester City squad: Confirmed shirt numbers for 2023/24

Manchester City come into the new campaign as the team to beat on three different fronts after winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 2022/23.

As is always the case with the Cityzens, the summer has been understated and efficient so far. Sales and signings are done with very little saga and fanfare, with Ilkay Gundogan’s departure being something of an anomaly.

They have added Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea to bolster midfield in Gundogan’s absence, but more signings are expected to arrive in the near future. Sales are also very possible with a number of players being linked away.

As it stands, here are Man City‘s squad numbers for the 2023/24 campaign.

Man City have not got a single senior player listed on their website without an assigned squad number, with Kovacic already having been handed a pretty prominent squad number.

Squad numbers subject to change during pre-season.

The primary two rules when it comes to squad numbers in the Premier League is that a player’s number must be unique within the team and between 1 and 99. Zero is not allowed.

Also following tradition, goalkeepers generally occupy numbers one and 13.

There are various traditions at play which suggest first-team players take numbers between 1 and 30, but this is something players and clubs are increasingly willing to ignore. Man City youngster Rico Lewis has worn the highest number, with 82 in the 2022/23 campaign.

Premier League players are only allowed to change their squad number during pre-season or if one is sold or loaned to another club in the January transfer window.

Clubs must submit their confirmed squad list – including shirt numbers – by a specified deadline each year and numbers cannot be changed thereafter. In 2021 that deadline was 1 September.
