Loki Is Done, The Show, The Character, All Of It

At this point it has been pretty clear that Loki is not getting a third season, both because of the conclusive nature of the finale, but also the writers talking about how it was always meant to be two halves of a book.

However, that has not stopped fans from theorizing about other Loki variants, or the new “God of Stories” Loki having some future role in the coming Kang conflict or Secret Wars. But if you want to hear it from the man himself, it seems that Loki is over in every sense.

Here’s Tom Hiddleston talking to Jimmy Fallon being about as explicit as you can be that this is the end for him in the role, and thus Loki’s time in the MCU across two different lives and character arcs:

“It’s the conclusion to Season 2 … It’s also the conclusion to six films, and 12 episodes, and 14 years of my life,” Hiddleston said, noting that he was 29 when he was first cast as Loki and is now 42. It’s been an entire third of his life, and it is not exactly stunning that he would eventually be moving on, even as the MCU will continue around him.

It’s a bittersweet moment for fans, as many are coming up with any possible theory or loophole that mean that Loki could show up somehow, but I’m not sure how much more clear Hiddleston can be here, or how much more conclusive the ending of Loki season 2 could be. Granted, as we will probably move away from the multiverse at some point, the “Yggdrasil” world tree Loki is holding together may not longer be needed, but that’s a question for years from now. And obviously there are all these rumors that Marvel could bring Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark back to life as some sort of Break Glass in Case of Emergency move, so nothing can be ruled out for really any past or present MCU character.

But yes, it seems that least the current plan is for Loki season 2 to be the end of the character’s arc and Hiddleston’s time in the role. Given that Loki’s final decision and embracing of his place holding the universe together is probably a top 3 MCU moment, I would imagine everyone, Hiddleston included, would like the character to go out on top like that.

Sure, it’s comic book movies, resurrections happen and plans change (I mean, this whole thing started after the original Loki literally died), but I think it’s best if we let Loki rest for a long, long while, if not forever. He’s earned it.
