Liverpool to fulfil wish of legendary manager Sven-Goran Eriksson

Liverpool have confirmed that Sven-Goran Eriksson will fulfil his lifelong dream of managing the club in a charity match against Ajax in March.

The former England manager recently announced that he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, revealing that he has “best case a year” left to live.

Eriksson enjoyed a hugely successful in football, winning a remarkable Serie A title with Lazio in 2000 before taking charge of England at three major tournaments, but confirmed that his one career regret was not having the opportunity to manage Liverpool – the club he supported as a child.

“My father is still a supporter and I am a Liverpool supporter too, always have been,” the 76-year-old said. “So I always wished to be the manager of Liverpool and that will not happen, but I’m still a Liverpool fan.”

After a fan campaign, as well as current manager Jurgen Klopp extending a personal invite for Eriksson to take charge of the club for an upcoming legends game, Liverpool have now confirmed that the Swede will be in the dugout for the charity event.

Eriksson will join legendary Liverpool trio Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldridge in the dugout, with the legends team set to consist of former players Jerzy Dudek, Sander Westervled, Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio, Gregory Vignal, Djibril Cisse and Ryan Babel.

One hundred per cent of the proceeds raised from the fixture – presented by AXA the club’s official training partner – will support the work of LFC Foundation and its charity partners, with two previous legends matches, against Manchester United and Celtic, raising £1.45m to help support vital work across the Liverpool City Region and beyond.

Tickets for the Legends charity match are priced at £28 for adults, £8 for juniors and £18 for over 65s.
