K-pop group Stray Kids dominated at the box office this weekend with their Live Nation concert film to the tune of a cool $19.1 million.
K-pop made an impressive showing at the Grammy Awards last weekend, but it also soared this weekend at the box office. Stray Kids’ Live Nation concert film, Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience, raked in over $19.1 million globally across 61 territories—buoyed significantly by Universal International in their K-pop movie debut.
The film even scored the top spot for a film at the weekend foreign box office with $13.5 million. Domestic delivered another $5.6 million from Bleecker Street’s Crosswalk cinema at 1,724 locations, with an estimated $3 million on Friday alone.
Interestingly, the film didn’t do nearly as well in South Korea, where it pulled only $227,000. But in several territories—including Mexico, Italy, and Poland—it actually had a better showing than Taylor Swift’s Official Release Party of a Showgirl, BTS’ World Tour Love Yourself in Seoul, and the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream.
“We at Bleecker are ecstatic that our first Crosswalk release is dominating at both the U.S. and global box office,” said Bleecker Street CEO Kent Sanderson. “The film worked in all formats as fans flocked to theaters to experience their favorite band in concert, and we look forward to continuing its success in lockstep with our partners at Live Nation Studios and Universal.”
Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience recounts the K-pop sensation’s world tour and their sold-out show at LA’s SoFi Stadium. IMAX screens represented 20% worldwide for the film’s weekend showings at about $3.9 million—making it the biggest opening weekend for the format for a Korean-language film. Meanwhile, in North America, the film raked in $2.1 million (38%) of the concert film’s domestic weekend showing. It will be interesting to see if the film can carry this momentum forward as Wuthering Heights hits theaters next week.
