The National Music Publishers Association reveals the top songwriters in the US for the fourth quarter of 2023, with Lana Del Rey and Noah ‘40’ Shebib securing the top performing and non-performing spot, respectively.

The National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) Gold & Platinum Program has announced the top songwriters for the fourth quarter of 2023, including the top artist-songwriter and top non-performing songwriter. Over the quarter, 1,843 Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum certifications were awarded.

Lana Del Rey secured the top artist-songwriting position, with 20 certifications, including the 8X Platinum “Summertime Sadness,” the 3X Platinum “Off to the Races,” and the Double-Platinum “West Coast,” all published by Sony Music Publishing. She is now published by Universal Music Publishing Group.

The top non-performing songwriter was Noah “40” Shebib, with 13 certifications for songs including the Multi-Platinum certified “One Dance,” “God’s Plan,” “In My Feelings,” and “Started from the Bottom,” — all recorded by Drake, who is publishing by Kobalt.

“Q4 saw some of the last decade’s biggest hits be rewarded for their continuing popularity,” said NMPA President & CEO David Israelite. “Noah’s massive success with Drake continues to enjoy huge numbers, and Lana Del Rey cemented her legacy as a game-changing songwriter and artist. We are thrilled to honor all of the quarter’s Gold & Platinum hitmakers.”

Lana Del Rey had a remarkable 2023. The year saw her receiving the Billboard Women in Music Awards’ Visionary Award, and releasing her ninth studio album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, her fourth album in less than four years.

Alongside the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) Gold & Platinum Program, the NMPA acknowledges and certifies the songwriters and publishers behind RIAA-certified singles. The RIAA incorporates both sales and on-demand streams when determining its Gold (500,000), Platinum (1 million), and Multi-Platinum (2 million or more) achievements.

The NMPA program has celebrated the talent and artistry of thousands of songwriters since its inception in 2007. Recipients of the NMPA Gold & Platinum Program include mainstays Beyonce, Lil Nas X, J. Cole, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Kane Brown, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
