Topline
Kylie Minogue announced her first Las Vegas residency on Thursday, a stint that comes hot on the heels of the singer’s runaway hit single “Padam Padam” and could help the Australian superstar finally crack the U.S. market.
Key Facts
Minogue’s three-month residency kicks off November 3 and the singer will be the first headliner at the Venetian’s new Voltaire nightclub.
The venue reportedly seats around 1,000 people, which will make the shows smaller and more intimate affairs than many other high profile Vegas residencies.
The smaller venue is in line with the singer’s smaller U.S. profile, which is in stark contrast with her ability to pack stadiums and arenas across Europe, Asia and Australia, where she is often known as just “Kylie.”
Minogue, speaking at a press conference in Los Angeles, promised fans a glamorous and extravagant show featuring old hits, tracks from her upcoming album Tension and unheard “reinterpretations” of songs.
Minogue said she feels she has “earned the right” to play a Vegas residency and ”to really enjoy being there,” adding that shows will be a mix of “flashy stuff” and “intimate moments.”
Tickets will go on sale on August 9.
News Peg
News of Minogue’s residency comes hot on the heels of her latest single, “Padam Padam,” a sleeper hit that has taken global music charts by storm and become one of summer’s biggest songs. The song is the singer’s first true hit of the streaming era—it went viral on TikTok, introducing Minogue to a younger generation of listeners—and was her first ever top 10 song on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic chart. Minogue’s label is hoping the single, alongside her upcoming album Tension, will help her finally crack the notoriously difficult U.S. market, where she enjoys just a fraction of the success she does elsewhere. Minogue, who soared to fame acting in Australian soap opera Neighbours and later switched to music, has sold over 80 million records in a career spanning decades, according to the BBC, with hits including “I Should Be So Lucky,” “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head,” “Spinning Around” and “Better The Devil You Know.”
What To Watch For
Minogue’s upcoming album, Tension, is due out weeks before her residency is set to begin and will be available from September 22.
What We Don’t Know
Nobody seems to know precisely what “padam padam,” the catchy phrase at the heart of Minogue’s latest single, actually means. Minogue has said “padam” was initially supposed to be the sound of a heartbeat but has now “taken on its own meaning,” suggesting it is now something of a greeting and farewell.
Surprising Fact
Minogue prevailed over Kylie Jenner in the reality star’s efforts to trademark the name “Kylie” in 2017.
