Kylian Mbappe is still yet to decide on his future but is currently mulling over contract offers from Real Madrid and current club Paris Saint-Germain, 90min understands.
The future of Mbappe remains unresolved with his deal at PSG up in the summer. There is a broad agreement over terms, but Mbappe is yet to give the green light to PSG, who won’t now alter their renewal proposal which has been on the table for quite some time.
PSG’s are increasingly pessimistic about their chances of keeping Mbappe, with Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao all eyed as potential replacements. But they also know Mbappe can change his mind very quickly and quite unpredictably, so not all hope is lost yet.
Sources have told 90min that PSG’s offer to Mbappe is worth €70m-gross-per-year. They would also agree to retroactively hand back his €80m loyalty bonus that was waived last summer after providing PSG with a legally binding guarantee they won’t lose out financially if he does depart on a free, having declined the one-year renewal option on his existing deal.
PSG have also given their approval for Mbappe to play in the 2024 Paris Olympics with France should he sign on, despite the tournament beginning in late July and ending in mid-August. With Euro 2024 also this summer, it means Mbappe will be absent for almost three months when factoring in pre-tournament training, games and rest for both events.
Madrid’s base offer to Mbappe is substantially lower than that of PSG’s, and the terms they have put forward are believed to be similar to the numbers from their 2022 bid when he was last entering free agency – a yearly salary worth no more than €30m plus a €130m signing-on bonus, though they have not given him the green light to play at the Olympics as of yet.
However, Madrid argue these sums are without some other incentives and contractual bonuses, while there would be further commercial opportunities in playing for them rather than in France with PSG. All-in, their offer could be close to that of PSG’s or even more lucrative in the longer term due to Mbappe’s individual earning power.
It’s possible Mbappe could be using PSG’s offer as leverage to try and bump up the base terms on Madrid’s proposal, while he may also be waiting to see if any Premier League sides to enter the race for his signature – Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with moves by the English press recently, although both clubs have downplayed any talks.
Mbappe could also allow his contract at PSG to expire and enter free agency, giving him control to play for France at the Olympics and resolve his future later in the summer.
His destination still remains most likely to be Madrid as it stands, but those at the Santiago Bernabeu thought this as well in 2022 before he made a surprise U-turn and signed a new PSG deal. It’s for this reason that Madrid president Florentino Perez has been hands-on in negotiations to try and finalise an agreement sooner rather than later, which is why we may see some clarity in the coming weeks now the January window has shut.
