Jose Mourinho has seen the lighter side of Arsenal’s ‘celebration police’ row over the last week, taking to social media to joke about his own antics.
Arsenal were intensely criticised by Sky Sports pundits for their celebrations after beating Liverpool 3-1 last Sunday. The result took the Gunners to two points of the Premier League leaders and kept their title hopes alive.
Points of contention included Martin Odegaard taking pictures with the club photographer’s camera and manager Mikel Arteta’s exuberant reaction to Arsenal’s third goal.
For the most part, Arsenal have been defended from various corners of the footballing community over their antics – even Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou came out to bat for them.
Mourinho, who managed three of Arsenal’s rivals in Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs, has also implied he is siding with the Gunners on the issue, taking to Instagram to show how much he loved an anger-inducing celebration.
Mourinho’s nine-picture collage featured some of his most iconic moments. The first image he selected is from his breakout 2003/04 campaign on the world stage, celebrating Porto’s late win at United on their way to Champions League glory.
Next to that is Mourinho celebrating in front of rival Rafa Benitez after Chelsea scored away at Liverpool, followed by his memorable sprint onto the pitch and point to the heavens after Inter knocked out Barcelona at the semi-final stage of the 2009/10 Champions League.
His knee-slide after Real Madrid completed a late comeback against Manchester City in 2012, shushing to the camera following United’s 1-0 victory at home to Tottenham and tapping of the Chelsea badge during their smash-and-grab win away at Liverpool feature on the next row.
The final three images show Mourinho cupping his ears to Juventus fans after United’s surprise win at Juventus in 2018, showing his affection for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after Spurs moved to the top of the Premier League having beaten Arsenal and storming the pitch during his time at Roma.
In typical Mourinho fashion, he captioned the picture with his iconic line of “I prefer not to speak.”
Mourinho is currently out of work having been sacked by Roma last month. 90min understands he is unlikely to return to Chelsea despite recent links suggesting a third spell at Stamford Bridge was on the cards.
