After a string of absolutely insane releases that has spanned really this entire year, but got extra intense with the release of Jedi Survivor in late April, I think I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I have played Survivor, Diablo 4, Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield and now Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. I haven’t finished them all (Baldur’s, obviously) and I missed a few (FFXVI, Armored Core), but the only one I care about that’s left is Spider-Man 2, which thankfully will probably only be a 20-25 hour game as opposed to another 100 monster like many of these.
As such, it is finally time to return to home base, Destiny 2, and having played this week more than I have in a while, I am once again reminded that this is definitely the best season Destiny 2 has had in years. Better than Seraph, better than Season of the Lost. At least in terms of its actual activities, I think you could make the case it is the best season between Savathun’s Spire, Altars of Summoning and now weird interludes like the puzzle-based Imbaru engine. It’s an incredible amount of content, good content, stuffed into one season. And that’s even past non-seasonal stuff that’s arrived like the at-least-difficult-at-first Crota’s End raid that received a lot of praise at launch.
Everything is just working here. In addition to the activities and at least a handful of good weapons and exotics, we also have what I would view as a badass storyline, powering up Eris with tributes so she can fight Xivu Arath herself, the culmination of a years-long arc where she’s been tormented by the Hive, but now can take them on by becoming one. The absolute all-star of this season, however, is Immaru, who I think you could make the case for being the legitimately funniest character in the series other than maybe Drifter (sorry Cayde, you tried too hard). I didn’t pay him much attention in The Witch Queen as he mostly just yelled at you during patrol missions, but here? He’s had some of the sickest Guardian burns of all time.
Yes, it’s true I could be playing more of Tears or Baldur’s but I am returning to Destiny because well, I still enjoy playing Destiny, and I realize that if I was going to skip a season, like I mostly did with Season of the Deep, Season of the Witch is not the time to do so. I may go point by point later and talk about why I think Witch could be Destiny 2’s best season ever, but I know I will have to shatter a lot of rose-colored glasses to do that.
Anyway, I’m happy to be back, and I’m looking forward to wherever wild place this season is heading.
