It Seems Like A ‘Spider-Man 2’ Venom Spin-Off Was Always The Plan

Spider-Man 2

While Spider-Man 2 has just been released as of today, there are already questions about what comes next. Without getting into specifics, there are probably 3-4 different teases for where the series could be heading next, and yes, all of them point to a Spider-Man 3, potentially, or some sort of Miles-like sub-game. But what if that Miles-like game was…Venom-like?

That’s already a topic that’s come up during an interview with Spider-Man 2’s Senior Narrative Director Jon Paquette over at Insider. He talked about Venom, who in the game is played by Candyman horror star Tony Todd, and how he wanted it to be “one of the best Venom stories you’ve ever experienced.” It is, it definitely is, as someone who has beaten it all already.

Paquette was then asked about a potential Venom spin-off in the vein of Miles Morales:

“So, here’s what we’re doing. We’re focused on ‘Spider-Man 2,’ and what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna wait to see how the fans react,” he said. “We’re gonna listen to the fans and we’re gonna ask ourselves, ‘Okay, what do the fans really want?’”

I would be amazed if “listening to fans” did not in fact include “we want a Venom game,” and while this sounds like a “oh we’ll see what they want” shrug, I have to believe this has been the plan from the start. You don’t really form these things out of thin air, as you already have eyes onto your next thing when a project like this wraps.

And I believe there are two clear indicators in the game itself that we are gearing up for a Venom spin-off. But in order to talk about this, we are going to have to get deep into spoiler territory. Like deep deep. I know it’s day one here, but if we want to talk about Venom, there’s really no avoiding it. So most of you should turn back now or return to this article later.

Ready? Okay.

First of all, the obvious. Venom is playable. Yes, I was as shocked as anyone when this happened, as I genuinely was not expecting that to happen. No, you aren’t swinging around the city as Venom, but there’s an entire campaign mission where you are rampaging through Oscorp, actively murdering employees include the famous Venom head-bite. In fact, this culminates in a fun little narrative bridge as the conclusion of the Kraven arc, where Kraven finally gets his ultimate monster fight, and we get to kill Kraven (another head bite) without having one of the Spider-Man do it, going against their moral code.

So the point is, they’ve already designed at least part of a kit for Venom. He has special moves, unique attacks. Yes, he’d have to have some beefed up enemies so he’s not effectively immortal or one-shotting everyone, but that leads me to my next point.

They also set up Carnage! The lengthy side quest about the “Flame” obsessed cult culminates in their leader getting his hands on another symbiote, with the reveal that one of his aliases is Cletus Kasady. I mean he also says the word “Carnage,” so we have a great antagonist for Venom already set, as Spider-Man 3 itself feels like it will move on from symbiote stuff as a main focus, if I had to guess.

So there you go. The question of who Venom would be this time seems like we could refocus back to the actual Eddie Brock, not present in the game, as it’s Harry who unwillingly becomes Venom in the end, not exactly a surprise twist players were expecting.

So we have 1) A movekit developed in part for Venom already, 2) Carnage set up to arrive and 3) The potential for Eddie Brock to get his own story. Yeah, I would say they planned this.
