How to start the mushroom season without harming your health

We really love mushrooms! Almost a third go to the forest for mushrooms as soon as such an opportunity arises, and a total of 91% of Latvian residents admit that they have been mushroom picking at least once in their life – this was evidenced by a survey conducted by “Mēness aptiekas” and “Norstat” even recently. Impressive! However, are all fans of this activity also good connoisseurs of mushrooms and know how to pick mushrooms safely and what to do so that a mushroom meal is a healthy pleasure.

By growing mushrooms, we get several benefits at the same time
“It should start with the fact that even going to the forest is a health-promoting event, because we are active and in the fresh air. If, in addition, you manage to find and put the desired mushroom in the basket, the positive emotions can be felt for a long time after successful mushroom picking, you can remember them even in winter, using mushrooms from the prepared stocks, and this, of course, is good for health. However, so that mushrooming is not overshadowed by failures (we cannot count on a good mushroom harvest every time), you have to prepare properly for a walk in the forest,” says the pharmacist of “Mēnes Aptiekas” Ārika Pētersone and reminds of five important rules.

  • Wear appropriate shoes and clothing to the forest, which at this time of year, especially if the day is hot, should be light and comfortable, preferably light-colored so that ticks can be seen on it. If the forecast indicates possible rain, it would be a good idea to take a light raincoat as well.
  • Take drinking water with you! Having a drink is always important, especially when the weather is sweltering.
  • Toss a calorie-dense snack, such as nuts or a dried fruit bar, in your pocket to satisfy your hunger and regain energy if the hangover drags on.
  • Before going to the forest, be sure to charge your phone and warn your family, a close person or a neighbor where you are going. Sometimes an avid mushroom picker or an elderly person gets lost. It is important that you can then call the rescuers by phone 112.
  • Finally, before picking mushrooms, it doesn’t hurt to refresh your knowledge about edible and poisonous mushrooms. A mobile phone can also come in handy, where you can search for information and make sure that the found beauty of the forest is edible.
