Houston Police Department releases extensive 1,266-page report detailing the Astroworld tragedy investigation — Travis Scott’s lawyer says the timing of the report’s release is deliberate.
On the heels of Friday’s release of Travis Scott’s much-awaited latest album, Utopia, the Houston Police Department has released their extensive 1,266-page report detailing their investigation into the Astroworld tragedy. The report follows the 18-month investigation into the ten deaths at the 2021 Astroworld crowd crush event.
While police say that the report’s release was “a coincidence,” Travis Scott’s lawyer Kent Schaffer contends the timing was a deliberate effort to impact sales of his new album. But even if Schaffer is correct, the plan seems to have failed, as the album reached nearly 128 million first-day streams on Spotify — the most significant debut this year and the fifth biggest album streaming debut on the platform.
Last month, a grand jury refused to indict the rapper on criminal charges related to the festival. However, Scott still faces several lawsuits from victims and families of victims.
Travis Scott, who has said that he is “devastated” by the tragedy at Houston’s NRG Park in which ten people were killed — including a nine-year-old boy — has asked that the lawsuits against him personally be dropped. An additional 300 people were treated for injuries at a field hospital during the event.
The rapper previously claimed he had no idea that multiple people were being trampled and passing out in the crowd as he performed in November 2021. But fan-captured footage shows the rapper noticing an ambulance in the crowd, pointing at it, and asking, “What the f*** is that?” before resuming the show.
Scott told police that he stopped the show after Drake left the stage when he was given instructions in his earpiece to do so. According to his attorneys, Travis was not charged with a crime because he followed all instructions from authorities during the incident.
