Haruhi Suzumiya x Hatsune Miku Crossover Project Is Coming

The Haruhi Suzumiya franchise announced on Wednesday that it is partnering with Vocaloid idol Hatsune Miku. The announcement makes a wordplay on the S.O.S. Brigade’s full name (Save our world by Overloading it with fun, Suzumiya Haruhi’s Brigade) by proclaiming, “Save our world by Overloading it with fun, Start of a new project!”

As of press time, details about the collaboration are limited, but the staff promised more information to come.

Author Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrator Noizi Itō launched the Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series in 2003. Japanese publisher Kadokawa‘s Sneaker Bunko imprint published more than 20 million copies in print as of 2017. The Little, Brown Books for Young Readers imprint and Yen Press released the entire series (at the time) in 10 volumes between 2009 and 2013. The first 10 volumes are also available in English digitally.

In November 2020, Kadokawa published The Intuition of Haruhi Suzumiya, a collection of two earlier short stories and one new short story. Yen Press published the volume in English digitally at the same time, with the print version following in June 2021.

Following the success of the light novel series, Kyoto Animation adapted it into The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime series in 2006. The series re-aired in 2009 with new episodes and a new episode order. The anime series spawned a feature-length film, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, in 2010, with a theatrical re-release in February 2026.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series have also inspired a manga series and spinoff manga series. Several of the spinoff manga have inspired anime works of their own.
