Google’s recent unveiling of its quantum processor, Willow, is not just a technological breakthrough but appears to be a big moonshot jump into the future of computing. The Willow team claim that it can perform a complex calculation in just five minutes that would take a supercomputer 10 septillion years is mind-boggling. To put this into perspective, 10 septillion years is roughly 700 billion times the current estimated age of the universe of about 13.8 billion years. This feat has led experts in this space to wonder out loud if quantum computers are tapping into the power of parallel universes to accelerate calculations.

This isn’t mere speculation; according to these researchers it’s rooted in the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. They claim that quantum computers can exist in multiple states simultaneously, allowing them to explore vast computational landscapes. This ability to explore multiple possibilities at once, reminiscent of the concept of parallel universes, has led some to speculate that quantum computers could provide insights into the nature of reality itself!
