Golden Globes 2024: The Best Of The Red Carpet

Hollywood loves a reboot and tonight, the Golden Globe Awards are getting a much-needed one, hoping to polish up its tarnished reputation. The A-list stars of movies and television are back at The Beverly Hilton, the traditional home of the Globes, but the ceremony is marked by many changes, including new ownership, a new voting board, a new network.

The 81st Globes will be the first ceremony since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was disbanded in June 2023 after it was sold to Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Entertainment amid complaints about a lack of diversity among voting members and decades of ethical violations. The reimagined Globes will air on CBS (instead of NBC) with a new voting body of 300 members representing 76 countries (with 60% of members being racially and ethnically diverse).

In addition to first-time host comedian Jo Koy, other changes to “Hollywood’s party of the year” include two new categories—Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television—and a menu created by chef Nobu Matsuhisa.

As for the awards themselves, the Barbenheimer rivalry will be renewed—as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie received the most nominations this year (nine)—including Best Motion Picture Musical/Comedy, Best Actress (Margot Robbie) and Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling)—while Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer received eight nominations, including Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Supporting Actor and Actress (for Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt). Both directors were also nominated—but Nolan took home the award.

To celebrate the year of the Barbie, several stars hit the pre-show red carpet thinking pink. Appropriately, Barbie star Margot Robbie made an appearance in a shocking pink sequined Giorgio Armani Privé gown inspired by the 1977 SuperStar Barbie. Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lopez were also thinking pink on the red carpet.

Robbie wasn’t the only star dressed for her movie. Oprah, who coproduced The Color Purple, was dressed in—what else?—the color purple.

One of the biggest colors of the red carpet was red. Selena Gomez wore metallic Armani and Ayo Edebiri stunned in Prada. Florence Pugh and Heidi Klum rounded out trend, with all the actresses showing off red heels to match.

The men also rode the crimson tide—including Best Supporting Actor winner Robert Downey Jr. and Saltburn star Barry Keoghan in Louis Vuitton.

Rosamund Pike (in Dior) and Hannah Waddingham both opted for elegant and daring black lace dresses with high necklines. While others—Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lawerence, and Greta Gerwig—went simple: Plain black dresses and minimal accessories.

Silver was also trending, with Kate Beckinsale, Julia Garner, and Emma Stone all shimmering in metallic.

Others turned up up classic looks in white. Elle Fanning attended her first Globes in vintage Balmain, as did Ali Wong, who won Best Actress in a Limited Series.

And rounding out the red carpet was none other than Taylor Swift, who was nominated for the new cinematic and box office achievement category for her film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and stood out in a glittering green gown.
