After a technological break in Riga, the restoration of the outdated walkways of the Esplanade has resumed. This week, it is planned to continue construction works – soil replacement and construction of sidewalk curbs.
The Housing and Environment Department of the Riga City Council has agreed with the municipal company “Rīgas meži” on watering six trees with watering bags. These trees need watering because the construction works affect the root protection zone. Watering will be done until the leaves mature. During this period, grass cutting in the projection of the tree crown will also not be planned, in order to preserve moisture and not contribute to additional stress on the tree root system.
It has already been announced that the municipality is implementing the restoration of the visual image of the seven-hectare park. In three of the park’s seven zones, the pavement will be completely replaced. In the first round, 1224 m2 will be replaced, in the second round – 5868 m2 of pavement, which covers a total area of 7092 m2. Residents can learn about ongoing construction works and their scope by reading the information on the stands located in the park. The works started at the end of October last year and are being carried out by SIA “Roadeks”.
Currently, the most work has been done in zone 1, along Kalpaka boulevard near the Academy of Arts building, where the crushed stone sub-layer and sidewalk curbs have been almost completely constructed. The basic top layer of crushed stone and the leveling layer of mineral materials under the paving stone must still be built, paving and, finally, landscaping works.
Changing the surface of the pedestrian path in the park, starting from the corner of Kalpak and Brīvības boulevards along the fountains to the Raini monument, which is the second area of the project, more than 30% of the earthworks have been completed. Construction of curbs and crushed stone foundations has begun. Work has not yet started in the seventh zone, as pedestrians are moving there for the time being.
The esplanade is part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. During the pavement replacement works, the existing ones in the park will not be disturbed or damaged
cultural values.
