Elton John and his husband have given testimony for the defense in the high-profile sexual assault case involving actor Kevin Spacey.
Elton John briefly appeared in a London court by video from Monaco following testimony from his husband that Spacey was not in attendance at a gala ball at their home in Windsor. John was the last witness called by the defense. Kevin Spacey, 63, has pled not guilty to a dozen charges that include indecent assault and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.
An alleged victim says while driving Spacey to the White Tie & Tiara Ball in 2004, or 2005, Spacey grabbed his crotch so hard he almost ran off the road. Meanwhile, testimony in Spacey’s defense said he only attended the event in 2001. Photographs from the event could only identify Spacey in attendance during the 2001 event—with all guests photographed each year.
Elton John added to that testimony saying Spacey was only in attendance once during the 2000s. He arrived in England after a private jet flight and the appearance was a surprise. “He was an Oscar-winning actor and there was a lot of buzz and excitement that he was at the ball,” testified John’s husband, David Furnish. Elton John added that Spacey spent the night at their house following the gala and that Spacey bought a Mini Cooper at the action held that night for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
The alleged victim says he may have gotten the year wrong, but that he would not forget the incident. The victim alleges the abuse began in the early 2000s and that the incident in the car was the final occasion.
The victim threatened to hit Spacey and avoided him on sight. Spacey alleges that the two men were friends and engaged in some romantic contact, but after learning the man was straight, he respected his wishes. Spacey alleges he was crushed when he learned the man went to police and said the man ‘re-imagined’ consensual touching.
