Big Number

$9 million. That’s how much the first two releases of Trump’s digital trading cards generated in combined sales. Trump received between $100,000 and $1 million from the first batch, according to financial disclosure forms, though it is unclear how much he received from the second batch.

Key Background

Trump announced the first line of his “limited edition collection” NFT cards last year for $99 a piece after teasing a “major announcement” on Truth Social, suggesting “America needs a superhero.” Those cards sold out in a day, netting $4.4 million, before the second batch generated about $4.6 million in under five hours. Both series included a sweepstakes program, offering a chance at a private dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home for anyone who purchased 47 cards (valued at $4,653 total). Some of Trump’s NFTs appear on the secondary market on platforms like OpenSea”>=true&search[sortBy]=UNIT_PRICE” target=”_blank” class=”color-link” title=”https://opensea.io/collection/trump-digital-trading-cards?search[sortAscending]=true&search[sortBy]=UNIT_PRICE” rel=”nofollow noopener”>OpenSea, with resale prices starting at 0.125 ETH ($272).

Tangent

Trump was booked and photographed at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta in August, after the former president was indicted on 13 felony charges for attempting to overturn his 2020 election loss in Georgia. He’s pleaded not guilty to all of the charges, which include solicitation of violation of oath by a public officer and racketeering, among others. Trump was charged alongside 18 other defendants, including four—Kenneth Cheseboro, Jenna Ellis, Scott Hall and Sidney Powell—who have taken plea deals. Six others reportedly spoke to the Fulton County District Attorney’s office about possible plea agreements in October.
