Well, I wrote about this a little while ago, and I was not expecting the problem to get exponentially worse. This is easily the weirdest thing I can remember happening with a Destiny 2 seasonal activity, one that has become essentially impossible to just play normally the longer the season has gone on. At this point, it is a nightmare to try to play through just a normal run of Deep Dives through the matchmade playlist. And this week made that so, so much worse.
While it was expected that a secret exotic mission was coming in this season of Destiny 2, it was not apparent that it would take place inside a Deep Dive. That’s what the result of all the exotic fishing was in the end. You deposit your three things into statues during one run of Deep Dive, beat the first two segments and then head over to the final timed quest off through a door on the right.
The problem is that now 60-80% of Deep Dive runs are people trying to do this with matchmade, mic-less randoms. That is A) quite difficult to do without communication and B) you have no idea if the group you’re running with is even trying to do the mission at all. If they don’t care, don’t know about it or have already done it. So either you leave or fail the encounter, or they leave once they see you’re going to do the quest they don’t want to do.
This joins the other big problem with Deep Dives, the Pressure Trial situation where in the matchmade mode, you have no control over whether all three players will agree or not agree to make the rest of the run harder. Some may want to sweat hard for the extra rewards, some may not care and are just trying to speed run it (now, you need to complete Deep Dives for a chance at getting the new exotic catalyst). This again, results in people leaving when they don’t get what they want, and this is a rare activity that does not have join-in-progress when it needs it probably more than any activity I’ve ever seen.
You essentially cannot run Deep Dives through the matchmade system anymore at all. You are much better off using LFG for one of three specific types of runs:
- 1) Exotic Quest Run
- 2) Max Pressure Trial Tier Run
- 3) Completion/Catalyst Farm Speed Run
These are three wildly different sets of objectives for one activity. I previously compared the system to trying to get three people to vote on whether a Nightfall should be Legend, Master or Grandmaster when they start it. But now you have to throw in the idea that hey, maybe we just ditch it halfway through and do an exotic quest instead.
Deep Dives are good! The exotic quest is good! But this is now a maddening, unplayable playlist as a result of how it all works together. Or rather, doesn’t work.
