Well, it wouldn’t be a week of Destiny 2 without some measure of controversy, and now it’s the fact that one brand new weapon everyone has been loving is accidentally too strong due to a pair of bugs that are going to be patched. Eventually.
There are two main bugs with Choir of One, the new special ammo exotic auto rifle acquired through the brand new exotic mission. The first will affect all gameplay, the second specific situations:
- Choir of One has essentially double the reserve ammo it’s supposed to. 400 rounds rather than 200, which means despite being a special ammo weapon, you can almost use it like a primary with relative ease. It may still be possible to do that with scav mods and such, but right now Bungie thinks that is too generous.
- The second bug is that Choir of One’s “Wyvern shot” is doing too much damage when paired with a Divinity Cage. Both of these are cited as necessary nerfs to tamp down on power creep, but naturally players are not terribly amused to learn that this new gun they really loved will be getting some measure of nerfs. It still will be really strong, as normal damage is not being affected, but the reserves change may limit its use.
There is good news here, in that Bungie realizes that people do not want their brand new Exotic nerfed the week after they get it. As such, even though the fixes are ready to go, they are not going to implement them until the start of Episode 2, which does not begin until October. So there’s a month plus of time to use it in its current state and all presently available content.
I greet this news with…a shrug. Nerfs are never great unless something is actively flat-out breaking the game, but we have seen this happen so many different times with so many different weapons or pieces of gear or skills that it’s hard to even be too annoyed as it’s just an inevitability.
What is of note is just how many bugs this mission launched with including immune bosses and it being missing in Fireteam Finder. Now the weapon is double bugged too, and all of this seems like a direct result of Bungie drastically cutting its QA team with its recent massive layoffs. They are…very important, as we’re seeing, and this has certainly always been true. Anyway, enjoy OP Choir of One while it lasts.
