Destiny 2

Bungie

Destiny 2 has been airing weekly messages in the “Veil Containment” lore drop mission, which is so far off the screen on the Neomuna map, and nothing ever tells you to go there, that the vast majority of the playerbase has missed it.

It also happens to be some of the best story content in either this season or all of Lightfall, explaining the central mystery of that expansion, The Veil, by showing its history and the experimentation that took place on the object by Maya Sundaresh, as told be her wife.

This week, however, we got what I would say is probably the most succinct, clear explanation of what The Veil actually is. You can listen to the audio below, but I will also transcribe the important part underneath that:

“This thing, the Veil. It’s…it’s some kind of web of consciousness. Just like the Vex network, but organic instead of artificial. It makes sense why the Vex want it. Paracausal simulations? There’d be no stopping them.”

It’s like, two sentences, but it makes a ton of sense when you view it in the context of both Neomuna and the wider lore of Destiny. And none of this was explained or honestly really even hinted at within Lightfall itself. We knew The Veil was stopping The Witness from getting into the Traveler but this “web of consciousness” idea was nowhere to be found.

But this explains a lot. How The Veil powers Neomuna and manages to let its citizens stay hibernating while their consciousness is projected into holograms. How it relates to another paracausal body like The Traveler, whose whole thing is rewriting consciousness when resurrecting Guardians. It has ties into Braytech exo stuff with the Vex, and past reveals about how exos were mind-wiped, given that that was consciousness fed into a robot body, and the Veil sucked that up like a vacuum before Maya managed to stabilize it and essentially…copy her consciousness into Lakshmi-2.

There’s probably even more implied I haven’t realized yet, but the point is that A) this is all really great and B) probably 90% of the playerbase is going to miss this because of how and when it was delivered. This should have been core campaign reveals during Lightfall. Along with that great cutscene we got a few weeks ago. Instead this idea that Lightfall was supposed to be a “bridge” in the story did not work, and now the most important information of the expansion is now being delivered the following season in messages that most players will never hear. I don’t get it.
