David Gilmour says he’s still interested in selling Pink Floyd’s catalog to get out of the ‘mud bath’ that is his contentious relationship with former bandmate Roger Waters.
Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour says he’s actively interested in selling the band’s catalog — but not because of the sweet payday such a deal would bring him. Rather, it would be one less headache for him to deal with in his contentious relationship with former bandmate Roger Waters.
“To be rid of the decision-making and the arguments that are involved with keeping it going is my dream,” Gilmour shared in an interview with Rolling Stone. “I am not interested in that from a financial standpoint; I’m only interested in it from getting out of the mud bath that it has been for quite a while.”
Undoubtedly, the “mud bath” refers to Gilmour’s infamously contentious relationship with his former bandmate, Roger Waters. The two have been at each other’s throats for years, with Gilmour having described Waters just last year as a “misogynistic, antisemitic, Putin apologist.”
The band has been entertaining a catalog sale since 2022, which, according to the Financial Times, would have been worth somewhere in the $500 million range. But prospective buyers have been notably wary, particularly in the face of inflammatory comments from Waters.
Though a number of significant artists have sold their catalogs for an enormous payday in recent years, such as Bruce Springsteen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gilmour has been focusing on his own solo work while Pink Floyd discussions remain shelved. His latest effort, Luck and Strange, he called “the best album I’ve made in all those years since 1973 when The Dark Side of the Moon came out.” Gilmour will be promoting the LP on a fall tour that kicks off late this month through mid-November.
