There is plenty of international football to enjoy in 2024, with South America’s premier continental competition taking place next summer.
Along with the Africa Cup of Nations, AFC Asian Cup, Olympic Games and European Championships, the 2024 Copa America will be one of the highlights of a bumper year of international tournaments.
Despite originally being a competition entirely made up of teams from CONMEBOL – the South American football federation – the Copa America has expanded in recent years, and will be hosted by the United States in 2024.
Here is everything you need to know about next summer’s tournament, including qualified teams, groups and fixtures.
The 48th edition of the fabled South American tournament, the 2024 Copa America will take place in the United States between 20 June and 14 July next year.
It was set to be hosted in Ecuador originally, but after they declined to stage the tournament, the decision was made to give it to the United States as part of CONMEBOL’s new partnership with CONCACAF – the North American football federation.
The United States also hosted the 2016 Copa America ‘Centenario’ in which CONCACAF teams featured, as will be the case for the 2024 competition.
There is plenty of history of nations outside of South America competing in the Copa America, with the 2019 tournament seeing Japan and Qatar from the Asian federation take part.
There are a whopping 14 different stadiums set to host games at the 2024 Copa America, taking teams all over the United States. Half of the venues will have over 70,000 capacities, meaning plenty of spectators in North America will be able to feast their eyes on some world-class international football next summer.
There are a mix of stadiums set to host matches, including Major League Soccer grounds and National Football League (NFL) arenas.

There will be 16 teams competing at the 2024 Copa America, resulting in four groups of four teams in the group stage phase. Each group is made up of one side from each of the four pots, those pots decided by a mixture of FIFA world rankings and recent tournament performances.
The top two sides in each group will automatically progress to the quarter-final of the tournament, with group winners facing runners-up from a different group.
Winners of each quarter-final will progress to the semi-final, with the final set to take place on 14 July. There will also be a third-placed play-off between the losers of each semi-final.
All knockout matches are one-legged ties.
Of the 16 teams that will compete in next summer’s tournament, 14 have already qualified for the competition. That obviously includes current world champions and record winners Argentina, as well as hosts of the most recent tournament Brazil.
All ten CONMEBOL national teams have automatically entered the 2024 Copa America, while there will be six additional CONCACAF sides joining them, including hosts United States.
Jamaica, Mexico and Panama have also qualified based on their 2023/24 CONCACAF Nations League performances, while the final two sides to qualify will have to do so through the play-offs.
Said play-offs will take place in March 2024, with the winners of Canada vs Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica vs Honduras joining the other 14 qualified countries.
