Champions League group stage: What do Man Utd and Newcastle need to qualify for last 16?
Manchester United had a two-goal lead over Galatasaray twice in their last match but drew 3-3

Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League are out of their hands as they head into the final round of group matches.

Fellow Premier League side Newcastle United are also reliant on other results going their way – and both English teams must win to have a chance of progressing.

Meanwhile, holders Manchester City and Arsenal have already booked their place in the last 16 as group winners.

They will be joined in the knockout stage by RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Atletico Madrid, Lazio, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven.

Celtic’s European hopes ended with one match remaining as the Scottish champions lost to Lazio.

The top two teams in each of the eight groups advance to the knockouts, with third place going into the Europa League.

So which clubs are still in contention? And who needs a miracle? BBC Sport gives you the lowdown on all the Champions League group-stage permutations.

2 FC Copenhagen 5 1 2 2 -1 5
3 Galatasaray 5 1 2 2 -2 5
4 Manchester United 5 1 1 3 -2 4

Manchester United must beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on 12 December and hope Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw the other match in order to progress to the last 16.

Should United beat Bayern and there is a winner in the other match in Group A, Erik ten Hag’s side will finish in third place and drop into the Europa League.

Bayern Munich reached the Champions League knockout stages as group winners with two matches to spare after beating Galatasaray.

Copenhagen will progress with victory over Galatasaray or if they draw and United fail to beat Bayern Munich.

Galatasaray must beat Copenhagen to progress because of an inferior goal difference and the fact they drew 2-2 in their first meeting.

2 Lazio 5 3 1 1 2 10
3 Feyenoord 5 2 0 3 0 6
4 Celtic 5 0 1 4 -11 1

Celtic’s European hopes ended with a match to spare in Group E when they were beaten 2-0 away to Lazio.

Brendan Rodgers’ side needed to win to preserve any hope of progression in the Champions League, or even the consolation of a Europa League spot.

Lazio and Atletico Madrid secured a place in the last 16 on matchday five and face each other to decide top spot in the final round of fixtures on 13 December.

Feyenoord will drop into the Europa League.

Group F

1 Borussia Dortmund 5 3 1 1 3 10
2 Paris St-Germain 5 2 1 2 1 7
3 Newcastle 5 1 2 2 0 5
4 AC Milan 5 1 2 2 -4 5

Newcastle United must beat AC Milan at St James’ Park in their final match in Group F to keep alive their Champions League dreams and hope already qualified Borussia Dortmund avoid defeat at home to Paris St-Germain.

AC Milan must beat Newcastle and hope PSG lose to reach the last 16.

That is because of their inferior head-to-head record with the French champions.

PSG can usurp Dortmund as group winners, and ensure they advance no matter the result elsewhere, if they beat the Bundesliga side on December 13.

Group G

1 Manchester City 5 5 0 0 10 15
2 RB Leipzig 5 3 0 2 2 9
3 Young Boys 5 1 1 3 -5 4
4 Red Star Belgrade 5 0 1 4 -7 1

Manchester City reached the last 16 with two matches to spare by defeating Young Boys on 7 November.

On the same evening, Group G rivals RB Leipzig joined them in the knockout stage, advancing with a win over Red Star Belgrade.

City won the group with one game to play when they beat Leipzig 3-2, while Young Boys secured a spot in the Europa League with a win against Red Star Belgrade.

That is because the Swiss champions will finish the campaign with a superior head-to-head record over Red Star.

Group H
Team P W D L GD PTS
1 Barcelona 5 4 0 1 7 12
2 FC Porto 5 3 0 2 5 9
3 Shakhtar Donetsk 5 3 0 2 0 9
4 Royal Antwerp 5 0 0 5 -12 0

Barcelona reached the knockout stages for the first time in three years when they came from behind to beat Porto 2-1 on matchday five.

With Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk still to play each other, Barcelona are ensured of at least a second-placed finish.

They will advance as group winners unless they lose to Royal Antwerp in their final fixture and Shakhtar, who have a better head-to-head record than Barca, beat Porto.

Only a Shakhtar win over Porto at Estadio do Dragao will mean the Ukrainian champions advance to the last 16. Any other result and the Portuguese outfit will progress.

Royal Antwerp‘s Champions League and Europa League hopes are already over.
