Bungie Said They’d Fix Destiny 2’s The Coil Scores In November, And Still Haven’t

Destiny 2

Bungie

Unless you’ve been grinding like a madman (like me), there are still plenty of reasons to run The Coil in Destiny 2 this season, whether that’s for red border crafting weapons, Dreaming City random drops or the final Platinum chest room that gets you loads of loot and more endgame materials than Grandmaster Nightfalls.

However, it requires a whole lot of pot smashing and shard collecting in order to hit that score to get into that room. You either have to break almost every pot that spawns, or get lucky with a glass collector who dumps out lots of them, but rarely appears. Coordinating with a random group to do that, who can pull you ahead and cause you to miss pots, is often annoying.

The weird thing is that after the season launched, literally the day after, Bungie took to Twitter to say that yes, they realized this system was too unforgiving and it was frustrating to miss Platinum because of a few extra pots or a lack of a Glass Collector appearing.

This was…November 29. It is now January 13, a month and a half later, with the seasonal storyline actually having ended, and there still has not been an update to actually fix this. The scores and shard economy has remained the same this whole time. That also appears to be the last time the issue was even acknowledged.

While a large chunk of the last month and a half has been the holidays, and certainly no one’s asking for this to be fixed over Christmas, it is kind of representative of many things slipping through the cracks at an increasing rate lately. More than usual in a game that always needs bug fixes and QoL changes, but these ones are time-sensitive.

I’m reminded of what just happened with The Dawning, where the entire mechanic the seasonal holiday event was based around, upgrading and throwing snowballs, just didn’t work. You’d buy the upgrades and essentially none of them worked at all, making actually killing enemies with the snowballs a giant pain. I’m not sure this was ever even officially acknowledged as being broken by Bungie, much fixed before the event ended after three weeks. Maybe…next year? Truly bizarre.

While yes, we do have 4.5 months left of this season, launching The Coil in the first place with these requirements, then acknowledging how bad it was on day two, then not fixing it for a month and a half is really not great, and indicates that recent layoffs really may have taken a significant toll on teams that are tasked with fixing things like this. In this case, however, all it should take is simply…lowering the platinum score threshold. Not to armchair dev, but that cannot be difficult, come on.

Again, sure, the game has plenty of long term bugs, but things like not fixing the core mechanic of an event before it ends, or not fixing the core activity of a season before the season’s storyline is over, is really not a place that you want to be. But here we are.
