August 23, 2023, Riga – “This product can be sold with a short expiration date and is intended for immediate consumption” – products marked with this label, added to the “Save and protect the environment!” category of the “Bolt Market” online store, to would encourage customers to take a step closer to sustainable food consumption. The data collected by “Bolt Market” reveal which products the residents of Riga and Jelgava most often give the last chance. The top ten is dominated by fresh packaged meat, as well as fruits and berries: strawberries, sweet cherries, grapes and raspberries. On the other hand, customers rarely choose to order products with a short shelf life such as ice cream, wine, ready-made meals and dairy products in larger packages.
Food delivery service employees indicate that people choose products with a short expiration date more responsibly than products with a longer expiration date. The head of “Bolt Market” in Latvia, Jānis Rimicāns, says that most of them are food products intended for preparing dinner the same day.
“The general trend shows that customers always choose fresh products, but if in a traditional store people tend to look for a product with a longer shelf life, then in the shopping basket of an online store, products with a short shelf life are found more often than usual. This is determined by two main factors – people are confident that they will use all the purchased products on the same day, and they are also attracted by the much lower price of such products,” concludes J. Rimicāns.
Currently, the category “Save and protect the environment!” is one of the most popular categories in the online store. The category also includes such products, the shortest validity period of which can be up to two days, and among the product manufacturers there are well-known Latvian and foreign companies. According to the manager of “Bolt Market”, the introduction of this category was initiated by consumers themselves.
“We have noticed that most of the orders are unplanned – people do not have time to go to the store or they only need a few ingredients to prepare their favorite food. City dwellers often include such purchases in their weekly shopping trips. When ordering food online, people want to be sure that they won’t have to throw it away later,” says J. Rimicāns.
